A pantry note
Gasagase, or poppy seeds, are used to add gentle nuttiness and body to gravies, sweets and regional spice preparations.
Flavour profile
Mild and nutty, with a soft texture after soaking and grinding.
Try it in
- Soak and grind to thicken selected gravies
- Use in traditional sweets and payasa recipes
- Toast lightly for spice pastes and fillings
Preparation advice
Rinse if the recipe requires, then soak in warm water before grinding. A small chutney jar or stone grinder helps achieve a finer paste.
Keep it fresh
Seal airtight in a cool place. Because the seeds contain natural oils, refrigerate for longer storage in warm conditions and discard if the aroma becomes stale or bitter.
Good to know
Small differences in natural colour, size and aroma are normal for agricultural ingredients. Review the current pack label for net quantity, ingredients, allergens and statutory declarations. Adjust quantities to your recipe and personal taste.
